Online Marketing Tips

There are straightforward things you or your tourism enterprise can do to improve your online visibility. We hope you will find these tips useful for marketing your hotel, restaurant, self-catering holiday cottage, bed and breakfast or visitor attraction.

Tip 3: Niche Local Directories

18 September 2006

With a number of local tourism related online directories to choose from it is useful to produce a shortlist of useful ones. Participating in local directories is an important part of your online marketing. There are a number of benefits. Visitors visiting the area for a specific reason are likely to use niche directories to research and plan their trips.

Local directories with unique and useful content are also likely to be well rated in the search engines. Well thought out links help to bring additional visitors directly to your site and also act as a vote for your website in the eyes of the search engines e.g. PageRank on Google.

So, within the context of North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders here are two examples of useful local directories. Firstly Fish Tweed, with information on fishing catches and water levels, has a useful accommodation directory for fishermen. Secondly for those drawn to the Northumbria coastline, The Holy Island of Lindisfarne website provides a collection of information about Holy Island. These are just two examples of directories that are well worth considering inclusion within. If you're running a small tourism enterprise some of these directories also offer an affordable Web presence.

Tip 2: Pay Per Click (PPC) Campaigns

16 October 2005

Fast track your search engine visibility through a pay per clip campaign. The three main search engines to target are Google, MSN Search and Yahoo. Setting up a pay per click campaign involves researching keywords and writing advertising text. When considering keywords think of local geographical places and attractions that attract visitors to your area. Each search engine has an extensive FAQ and resource section on how to set up an effective pay per click campaign. Alternatively let VisitEarth set up a pay per click campaign for you which you can then take over and develop.

Tip 1: Open Directory

5 July 2004

The Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org) is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. Search engines such as Google use the Open Directory as a source. Make sure your tourism enterprise is listed in the relevant category of the Open Directory.

e.g. for Boathouse Cottage a Northumbrian self-catering holiday cottage near Berwick-upon-Tweed the correct category is:

Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: England: Northumberland: Berwick-upon-Tweed: Travel and Tourism: Accommodation: Self Catering
